Your Chance to Contribute to an Audit of the DVA

The Australian National Audit Office is undertaking an audit of the ‘Efficiency of Veterans Service by DVA’ and is open for contributions from the general public and stakeholders.

The objective of this audit is to assess whether DVA is efficiently delivering services to veterans and their dependents and is about to examine if:
- DVA’s business systems and processes support the efficient delivery of services to veterans and their dependants; and
- compensation, support and health services are delivered efficiently by DVA.


‘Gallantry Spent’ painting wins Award

An oil painting depicting Australian Light Horsemen riding in the desert has been awarded the 2017 AFA (Victoria) Story Writing and Art Competition prize.

AFA (Victoria) President Carl Schiller presented the Division’s Sir Edmund Herring Memorial Prize to Jennifer Spencer for her ‘Gallantry Spent’ oil painting at the end of last year. The Special Awards prize was given in recognition of Jennifer’s outstanding painting depicting Australian Light Horsemen riding in the desert.

 MEET-A-MATE Air Power in the Gallipoli Campaign

Presentation by Hugh Dolan, author and historian.
Hugh Dolan is a former RAAF intelligence officer and author of a series of historical graphic novels.
Learn how air power was used extensively during the Gallipoli Campaign and the intelligence provided to the commanders and planners before and after the landings. Hugh Dolan, after intensive research, has changed what we know about Gallipoli.
The presentation, lasting about one hour, will be followed by a light lunch.  Bus from East Hawthorn is available.

Tetbury – Remembering the AFC a century on

Remembrance Day 2017 marks the centenary year of the 1st (Training) Wing’s arrival in Tetbury, and on this day Group Captain Carl Schiller OAM CSM (Retd), presented on behalf of the Air Force Association a bronze plaque paying tribute to the kindred relationship between the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) airmen and the Tetbury townspeople, and commemorating the airmen who died during the Wing’s operation from nearby Leighterton and Minchinhampton airfields.

Air Force Association Vietnam Veterans Bursary Recipient Joins Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Young Australian flautist, Bronte Hudnott has joined Edinburgh-based Scottish Chamber Orchestra as Sub Principal Flute after graduating with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London.

In 2010, Bronte Hudnott was awarded an Air Force Association Vietnam Veterans bursary to assist with her undergraduate studies at the Victorian College of the Arts.


2017 Merz Lecture

On Saturday, 18 November 2017, the Friends of the RAAF Museum hosted a lecture on the RAAF Phantom F4 E. The lecture was part of the annual Merz series of lectures and was held in the former Officers’ Mess RAAF Point Cook.

The guest speakers were AVM (Retd) Dave Rodgers, AM (pilot) and WGCDR (Retd) Lance Halvorson, MBE (navigator) who shared their experiences as crew members on the F4-E Phantom aircraft.


180 People Attend the 2017 Annual Pilgrimage to the AFC Memorial

On a beautiful Spring Sunday, the 19th November 2017, around 180 people made the Annual Pilgrimage to the AFC Memorial RAAF Williams Point Cook to witness the unveiling of the Commemorative Plaque and remember those who served and those who serve.


Care Parcel 2017

On 9 November a team of Air Force Association Victoria volunteers gathered at the Association’s Hawthorn office to assemble and dispatch 705 care parcels for deployed Air Force personnel in the Middle East and elsewhere.

This year the AFA team was joined by volunteers from 21 Squadron, led by their Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Nigel Leurs. As past recipients of the AFA’s Care Parcel Program, the 21 Squadron members know how important it is to receive a little something from home at Christmas.
